Human-centered design engineering team
The ATIS project has been particularly demanding as the subject matter is complex and it is built upon COTS products. The challenge is to design the configurations in a way that will create and maintain a coherent and intuitive UX experience across multiple off-the-shelf products.
UX Design, User Research Support
Early in the process, our team conducts user research with surveys and focus groups. I support this effort by helping determine the features and designing screens to be used in A/B testing.
In addition to testing, we collaborate with stakeholders to decompose requirements. One of my main responsibilities is to facilitate sessions with product owners, SMEs, solution managers, and configuration managers to gather information.
Based on the requirements from stakeholders and findings from research analysis, I create user flows and wireframes for configuration designs to be implemented in a sprint, or UX enhancement designs to be developed by the COTS vendors.
Accessibility Reviews
As a federal system, ATIS must meet Section 508 compliance standards. Our HCD team conducted regular accessibility reviews to ensure that software for the system met accessibility criteria.
One of the accessibility reviews I completed was for a mobile application to be used by the Army to record fitness test results. I evaluated the app against Section 508 guidelines and WCAG 2.0 level A and level AA criteria and documented the findings in a report with screen annotations so the vendor's design and development teams could address the issues.
Heuristic Evaluation of Training Application
Our HCD team conducted heuristic evaluations of COTS products to assess their usability and identify opportunities to improve the user experience.
One of the heuristic evaluations I conducted was for functionality for managing training records. I evaluated the screens against usability guidelines and heuristics and synthesized the findings into a detailed report with call outs and screenshot annotations.
The report included a summary screen providing a high-level, consolidated view of the application's performance against usability standards and heuristics. Issues identified in the report were prioritized into the backlog. The report was distributed to product owners and stakeholders, providing a baseline and a metric for improvement, and to the COTS vendor as reference for future enhancements.
